The evening featured a special documentary screening following our work on the GeoEnergy NI project, panel discussions, and Tetra Tech being presented an award for excellence in geoenvironmental services.
Members of our geothermal team were at the Ulster Museum in Belfast last week as part of the NI Science Festival 2025, where they celebrated two years of hard work and innovation with the screening of the 30-minute documentary, ‘Unearthing the heat beneath our feet’.
The documentary follows the GeoEnergy NI project, which examines the shallow and deep geothermal potential at the Stormont Estate, Belfast and the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise, Greenmount Campus, Antrim. Tetra Tech was the lead specialist consulting and engineering contractor for the project
The project is being delivered by the Department for the Economy with scientific support from the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland (GSNI) and showcases how geothermal energy can be used to “reduce our reliance on fossil fuels whilst becoming more self-sufficient” as outlined in the NI Executive’s Energy Strategy.
Discussing the Potential of Geothermal Solutions
The evening also included a panel discussion hosted by Conor Lydon, Tetra Tech Project Manager for the GeoEnergy NI project. Peter McConvey, Associate Hydrogeologist at Tetra Tech and lead specialist consulting and engineering contractor on the project, also sat as a panel member.
Attendees included geothermal practitioners and contractors, academics, researchers, regulatory stakeholders, local businesses, educational professionals, local Council representatives and public and private housing authorities, who were all there to learn more the project’s technical data findings and the potential for geothermal energy across Northern Ireland.
Excellence in Geoenvironmental Services Award
The project represents a key milestone in the Executive’s Energy Strategy Action Plan to support the decarbonisation of the Northern Ireland economy and help deliver net zero carbon energy by 2050. Our contribution to this mission saw Tetra Tech receive an award for ‘Excellence in Geoenvironmental Services’ on the night.
