George Firth – Transitioning from the Armed Forces to a Senior GIS Consultant

George spent 12 years in the armed forces, initially in the Yorkshire Regiment, operating all over the world and qualifying as a sniper before transferring to the Royal Engineers to enter the GIS profession. He studied at the Defence School of Geospatial Intelligence before working at the Defence Geographic Centre, finishing off at the home of military GIS at RAF Wyton before joining Tetra Tech.

How did your experience serving in the army contribute to your transition into the GIS industry and shape your approach to working with geospatial data?

Having joined Tetra Tech from a geospatial role within Defence, I was well positioned to pivot the application of my skills to a different sector. Similarities in the roles have aided my transition, such as understanding end user needs and stakeholder engagement, it was just a case of swapping military commanders with clients! This has been of great value as I have developed as a senior consultant, engaging with clients across multiple disciplines.

What specific skills or knowledge did you acquire during your time in the army that have been particularly valuable in your career?

My experience with technical leadership has been crucial in managing GIS projects. My military service also taught me the importance of collaboration, which has been invaluable in working with a diverse range of clients and multidisciplinary teams. I’ve found that the ability to make executive decisions in time demanding circumstances, a skill honed in the military, is highly relevant in consulting. Lastly, the hands-on experience with advanced geospatial technology I received in the military has provided me with practical knowledge that is directly applied to my role at Tetra Tech.

What advice would you have given yourself when you first started at Tetra Tech?

I would advise people to ask more questions. Never be afraid to ask questions regardless of how menial you think they might be, it’s the quickest way to develop and allows you to understand processes and methodologies behind what we do quicker, especially when it comes to those topics that you may not have necessarily been exposed to in a military environment – don’t think you’re being a burden!

Looking back at all you’ve experienced, would you recommend working at Tetra Tech?

I would absolutely recommend working at Tetra Tech. I have received amazing support from day one, working with a brilliant team of enthusiastic individuals. Tetra Tech’s flexible working arrangements are a notable benefit as I can manage my busy lifestyle around providing maximum value for clients. The company’s approach to professional development is second to none and is what has enabled me to continue into my final year as an MBA candidate.
