Tetra Tech Planning facilitated a key part of Gloucester’s waterside regeneration by securing planning permission for a flagship Next store and new retail warehouse units

Peel Group appointed Tetra Tech to lead a team of consultants in securing planning permission for its Peel Centre site. Situated in the town’s prominent waterside at the heart of Gloucester, the site had grown derelict after its old cinema venue had lain vacant for over five years, greatly detracting the from the canal-side’s attractive aesthetic.
Despite its central location, the site was ‘out–of–centre‘ in retail terms. We therefore needed to demonstrate to the Gloucester City Council that additional retail provision at this location was sustainable and compliant with relevant retail planning policy requirements.
Our team successfully demonstrated that the development would bring significant economic benefits to Gloucester. For the Next store to truly thrive and complement the location, we also accounted for numerous canal-side public realm improvements.
With planning permission secured, this project has seen Gloucester gain a high–profile retailer on an improved site that better complements the appealing waterside location.
