Tetra Tech managing state-of-the-art SRC campus delivery to Armagh

To agument the education experience for staff and students alike, we are managing the delivery of a state-of-the-art facility for Southern Regional College’s £35m campus in Armagh.

Featuring roughly 12,000 sqm of specialist accommodation, the two-stage project (develop and build) includes site clearance and removal of the existing college buildings and drainage, earthworks, site works and landscaping. A fully serviced campus building will be constructed to facilitate world-class professional and technical education and training.

The project works, which commenced at the beginning of the new year, is expected to create 200 construction jobs during its 26-month building period, and 25 apprenticeship opportunities across a range of skills after completion in 2020.

Alongside project management, we’re also contributing our expertise within architecture, planning, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering, and more.

Located on Lonsdale Street in Armagh City, the campus presents high potential for positive impact on the community, the college, and its students for the following reasons:

  • Site characteristics and size
  • Recreation and economic potential
  • Available local amenities
  • Improved amenity for residents
  • Public transport (car, cycle, bus travel)
  • Parking and safe pedestrian access
  • Existing utilities and infrastructure

With 16 general classrooms, 16 information technology laboratories, and 48 specialist teaching spaces, the campus accommodates teaching across many specialist vocational areas. It also incorporates a central hall, learning resource centre, central administration, student and staff study, social areas, individual offices, counselling/interview rooms, storage, and more.

An innovation centre at the heart of the building will facilitate industry-related student projects using state-of-the-art technology and equipment. This innovation space aims for an environment inspiring the next generation of industry leaders.

Darren Price, project manager at Tetra Tech, said, “We are delighted to have reached this milestone in the SRC project with the appointment of Felix O’Hare and Company Ltd. to deliver the Armagh campus. We are excited to have the contractor join the team as we enter the construction stage of this BIM Level 2 project, and look forward to the fruition of the innovation we have incorporated into their contract.”

Beverly Harrison, director of Further Education at the Department for the Economy, also stated, “The construction of this new flagship facility in Armagh will provide a significant boost to the local construction industry, supporting employment as well as providing valuable training and development opportunities for apprenticeships.”

Working with the Department for the Economy, the SRC will help invest £95 million toward realising three new campuses over the next four years. These will be located at Armagh, Banbridge, and Craigavon.
